Sadly I do not agree with his job. I myself require art to flow from all point in my life to even want to create art. And I suppose it may just be selfishness. But I would never want to work for an insurance firm. That being said, I understand still having the ability to think creatively in such a position.

Last sentence was funny...

But yes... I never really quite understood the length of a piece and why it is important. As I reader I prefer shorter books (100-300 pages). Longer books(600-1000 pages) tend to lose my interest very quickly... Unless of course the book is a back to back page turner with exciting twist. So I suppose the length of a piece is dependent on your audience.

We so often forget the value of everything we do. We worry about what the finality is, more than the journey.

Through that effort, we grow. That moment is edifying, and it has value too, even if the end result isn't what we would want.

Whether it be 10,000 failed filaments, or 10,000 garbled words, the journey had us becoming something better, gradually.

On the subject of quotes, this is one of my favorite quotes about the fear of failure and criticism.

Thomas Edison was once interviewed about his process of inventing the light bulb. When asked how he felt about failing 10,000 times before achieving a working prototype, he replied, "I didn't fail 10,000 times. I just found 10,000 ways not to make a light bulb."

I think sometimes we forget the value of our "mistakes." There is a great comfort in knowing that once you mess something up real bad, you're not likely to mess the next thing up in the same manner. So with every criticism, of both ourselves and others, we learn one new path that our writing can attempt to discover.

I'm glad to hear your family is doing well Tony. Especially after already enduring Katrina, the last thing they need is more of the same hardship in Houston.

I've been really proud of hearing how the people in Houston have banded together to help their neighbors out. Those stories help to tempers some of the gloom.

I had this problem a few days ago, i felt inclined to write something dealing with my race. The problem wit hthat is i grew up this race, so there are so many topics i can cover and it was overwhelming. I finally started to jot down some notes and all in all in came together into a poem Deeper than Skin Color, although i waned to do more, i actually came out with something worthwhile. You've highlighted an essential problem with writing, if we are determined to write it ideas will unlock and something beautiful will surface. Great post!

Yes, you are right. As simple as it sounds this is the most important aspect of getting ideas for writing. We encounter so many different things through a day and tend to forget certain situations that are great for writing. I personally carry one around, so when i am having one of my inspiratinal days where my pen won't stop i can write many quality articles or poems. Great article, i will be adding you to my blogroll.

That feeling of reading older notes is like having a dialog with a different you. I personally never feel like I've grown too much, but when I read old writings, the changes are hard to ignore.

I like having the multiple notebooks also; I think having a goal for each keeps me more focused on writing what I'm really setting out to.
